About 7 - 8 weeks ago I commenced the beginning of my journey into the Paleo lifestyle. In my current study of Nutritional Medicine at the Australasian College of Natural Therapies (ACNT), I heard about the Paleo Way from my tutor who has been Paleo for 2 years and loves it so far. When I heard about Paleo, I decided to do some more research to find out what it is.
Through my research I stumbled across the website Paleo Australia, which provided me with the answer to my question.

What the *bleep* is paleo?
‘Paleo’ as a word simply means ‘old’ and refers to the way we as a species were living in our days of hunting and gathering. Living a modern paleo lifestyle doesn’t mean you should move into a cave and hunt down your neighbours cows with a spear. It simply means looking back to what we as a species have evolved to eat, in order to achieve optimal health.
"Achieve optimal health"... This phrase really stuck to me. Having only just started my nutrition course, everything that has been said to us in class so far has been about achieving optimal health, so does this mean the way that I am eating now (based on the Australian Healthy Eating Guidelines) is not actually keeping me healthy?
When I began to read on I knew that this was going to be a great diet for me. Paleo Australia says that new studies are showing the the foods that we are eating are linked to many diseases that are present in the western society such as; cancers, type 2 diabetes, hypertension, cardiovascular disease, obesity, gout, various autoimmune diseases and many more.
The Paleo diet is said to have reversed autoimmune diseases in some cases. Watch this amazing presentation here.
So why a 30 Day Trial? Paleo is not for everyone, just like with any diet choice be it Vegetarian, Pescetarian, Vegan, Jenny Craig or any fad diet, everything is very individualised meaning that "what works for one, may not work for another." So should this diet not meet my expectations of what it claims to be able to do I can always go back to my old ways of eating or try something different.

Through suggestion of Paleo Australia, I bought the book "The Paleo Solution: The Original Human Diet" written by Robb Wolf. In the next couple of days I will be commenting on the book, If you are interested in learning more about Paleo I would definitely recommend this book. |
